Akan / Kushiro

After breakfast, board on a cruise to visit Lake Akan, where you can see the famous Marimo, rare balls of algae formed by the motion of the water. Wild Marimo has been a protected species in Japan since the 1920s and is an important part of Japan's indigenous culture, said to resemble the world itself: each side must be given light in order to grow, and a balance is needed for it to maintain itself.

In the afternoon, drive to Kushiro National Park, the largest wetland in Japan. Canoe along the river from Lake Toro-ko to Hoso'oka. Here you will stop at the Observation Deck and admire an amazing panorama of the winding Kushiro-gawa River beneath and the Akan Mountain Range in the distance.

Afterward, transfer to Kushiro Shitsugen Eki and take the Norokko train to Kushiro city, where you can have a different view along the way.
