Malaysia’s Anti-Pollution Drive Targets Marine Parks

From 1 January 2026, all visitors to Malaysia’s marine parks must take their rubbish with them when they leave.

The new policy is part of a nationwide effort to combat pollution – particularly plastic waste, which poses the greatest threat to marine ecosystems.

Supported by multiple state governments and conservation NGOs, the initiative underscores Malaysia’s commitment to keeping its marine parks clean, healthy and sustainable. Plastic pollution has caused coral damage, harmed marine life and increased microplastics in the ocean, with potential impacts on human health and food security.

The ministry is urging all tourism stakeholders — including boat operators, dive centres and tour guides — to actively support the “Take Your Rubbish Home” campaign and remind visitors to carry their waste out of the parks. A Trails supports this initiative to help protect marine biodiversity across Malaysia, ensuring the long-term sustainability of marine tourism in the country.
