Many parts remain inaccessible, but these well-preserved sections of the wall are made accessible for visitors from across the world. This is what has kept the Great Wall such a sight beyond words. The part at Badaling is one of these fortifications that still stands proudly and bears the stamp as a key national cultural relic.

Explore two of Beijing’s most iconic historical sites in one day. Visit the majestic Badaling section of the Great Wall and discover the ancient Ming Tombs, the burial grounds of 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty.

Day 1

Full day tour

We leave the city behind and travel to the amazing Great Wall of China. Built as a form of defence by millions of labourers, this is a remarkable feat of engineering. Construction continued over the centuries, with the most impressive work during the Ming Dynasty from 1368 to 1644. Leaving early in the morning, we head to the Badaling section, the best-preserved and most complete part of the fortification. This width in this area is an average six metres which would have enabled five horses to gallop, or 10 soldiers to march abreast. In the afternoon we visit one of the 13 Ming Tombs and the Sacred Way at the foot of the Tianshou Mountains. The first emperor to be buried here was Yongle who died in 1424 and his tomb, Changling and that of Emperor Zhu Yijun, Ding Ling, who died in 1620, are the only two open to visitors today. The Sacred Way runs for about one km and it is flanked on both sides by carvings of human and animal figures.
