When the River Kwai is mentioned, many people think of film The Bridge on the River Kwai, but the river’s appeal goes far beyond the film. Forested hills, quiet villages, temples and caves line the riverbanks, making the journey ideal for slow, unhurried exploration.
Thailand’s first five-star river cruise, The RV River Kwai Cruise, offers an intimate way to explore the river. It is a small, intimate vessel designed for immersion rather than crowds. Gliding quietly through the landscape, with onboard dining and well-paced excursions, it allows travellers to focus on the scenery and stories that define the River Kwai.
The River Kwai Bridge
The River Kwai Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Kanchanaburi Province. Built during the Second World War and later reconstructed by the Thai government, it remains in active use today, with trains crossing as part of daily life.
For many travellers, the bridge marks the starting point of a journey through the region. As the RV River Kwai Cruise approaches, guests can view the structure from the water and walk across it, watching the river flow calmly below as trains pass slowly overhead.
The Landscapes
As the cruise continues, historical echoes gradually give way to natural beauty. The river holds many surprises, and the journey allows guests to discover them at a gentle pace.
Temples and Caves
Along the way, the vessel passes many distinctive temples and caves. Wat Tham Khao Poon is a highlight. Its underground network includes nine interconnected caves that bring together Hindu and Buddhist sacred spaces. Soft lighting enhances the atmosphere of quiet mystery.

Wat Tham Sua, or the Tiger Cave Temple, is one of Thailand’s most beautiful temples and home to Kanchanaburi’s largest seated Buddha. Set atop a mountain over 600 metres high, it features an 18-metre golden Buddha built in 1937. A climb up the steps leads to panoramic views over Kanchanaburi’s rice fields.

National Parks and Hot Springs
Further north, the cruise enters Sai Yok National Park. The park covers more than 500 square kilometres of protected forest and is known for its waterfalls, caves, historical remains and traditional raft houses along the river. Sai Yok Yai Waterfall cascades through dense greenery, bringing a refreshing coolness to the air.
Hin Dad Hot Spring is a natural treasure. Its mineral‑rich waters offer a soothing pause after a day of exploration. As the ship drifts along the river, people can see rolling hills, rice fields and villages. Long‑tail boats occasionally skim across the water, completing a vivid riverside scene.
Ruins and Museums
As the journey continues, historical sites and museums along the route provide deeper context. Hellfire Pass is a rock cutting about 26 metres deep. It was carved by prisoners of war using hand tools and explosives to allow the railway to pass through solid rock.

Today, the site serves as a memorial. Weathered flags, photographs and flowers honour those who lived and worked here under extremely difficult conditions.

The ancient ruins of Prasat Muang Singh date back more than 800 years. They once marked the western boundary of the Khmer Empire. The remaining Khmer‑style structures stand as quiet witnesses to a distant era of power and culture.

Five-Star Cruise Experience
The RV River Kwai Cruise was created by Luzi Matzig, whose passion for Southeast Asia spans more than forty years. Born in Switzerland, Luzi settled in Thailand after arriving in 1971. Beginning with Bangkok’s leading travel agencies, he went on to build and lead a travel group whose operations span multiple Southeast Asian countries, becoming a benchmark figure in the region’s high-end travel industry.

Through countless trips along the River Kwai, Luzi realized that the area’s beauty and complexity could not be fully captured by conventional travel. Historical memories, spiritual sites and natural landscapes all lie along the riverbanks.

Rather than pursuing scale and speed, he envisioned a way to travel without constant packing and unpacking, while still reaching lesser-known places. Personally involved in the design, he created a small and welcoming vessel that blends nineteenth-century vintage elegance with modern luxury, allowing access to the most scenic and less accessible stretches of the river.

The cruise features 10 teakwood luxury cabins and accommodates a maximum of 20 guests. Each cabin includes a private bathroom, air conditioning and a personal safe. The atmosphere is quiet and intimate. Experienced guides and a dedicated crew ensure that the journey unfolds with ease.

Over the years, The RV River Kwai Cruise has earned an excellent reputation among international travellers. Guests consistently praise the comfort of the ship, the professionalism and attentive care of the crew, and the slow, immersive experience of travelling along the river.
After returning from daytime excursions, guests may unwind on the sun deck, watching the riverbanks drift past in unhurried succession. At evening, a curated à la carte dinner is served on board, accompanied by Thai cocktails, creating an atmosphere of understated elegance beneath the night sky.

Onboard experiences also include Thai cooking sessions, where guests learn to prepare iconic dishes such as Tom Yum Soup and Green Curry. Throughout the journey, a dedicated crew, personal stewards and a professional guide ensure attentive service and insightful interpretation at every stage.
