Thailand Cancels 60-Day Visa Exemption

Thailand’s Cabinet has officially approved the cancellation of the 60-day visa-free scheme, following a proposal from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Revised visa arrangements for individual countries are expected to be announced at a later stage.

The visa-free programme previously allowed travellers from more than 90 countries to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without requiring a visa. This policy expanded an earlier scheme, which granted citizens from 57 countries visa-free entry for approximately 30 days, depending on nationality.

* Thailand continues to attract millions of visitors with its stunning beaches, rich culture and vibrant city life, remaining one of Asia’s most popular travel destinations.

However, the scheme has faced growing criticism from local residents, particularly in Thailand’s major tourist destinations. Many argued that certain visitors had been exploiting the visa exemption programme.

Critics claimed that some foreign nationals had entered Thailand under the scheme to work illegally or run unauthorised businesses. Others expressed concerns that the expanded exemption had weakened visitor screening measures and contributed to an increase in crime involving foreign nationals.

* As visitor numbers continue to rise, Thailand is seeking to strike a balance between tourism growth and effective visitor management.

In April, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworrakun announced that the government was considering scrapping the 60-day visa-free policy and reinstating the previous entry arrangements.

According to Surasak, the proposed changes are intended to attract higher-quality and long-stay visitors, helping to strengthen Thailand’s tourism sector and broader economy.

Earlier this month, the minister confirmed that the proposal would be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration. Following the Cabinet meeting on 19 May, he officially announced that the 60-day Thailand visa-free scheme had been abolished.

Under the temporary replacement measures, visa-exempt travellers will once again be permitted to stay in Thailand for around 30 days, depending on their nationality.

Surasak also stated that officials are currently reviewing visa requirements on a country-by-country basis. Future visa policies and permitted lengths of stay will be determined according to each nation’s economic conditions and security considerations.

* Travellers planning future trips are encouraged to stay informed as Thailand reviews and reshapes its visa arrangements.

However, the minister has not yet confirmed when the revised visa criteria will be submitted to the Cabinet, nor when the cancellation of the 60-day scheme will formally come into effect.

For now, travellers are advised to keep an eye on future announcements as Thailand continues refining its entry policies. For more travel news or policies, please contact us!
