Japan has officially introduced a significant increase in visa fees for foreign nationals, with the new charges applying to all visa applications submitted from 1 July 2026. The revision marks the country’s first major adjustment to visa fees in decades and will affect travellers from countries that require a visa to enter Japan.
Visa Fees Increase by up to Five Times
Under the revised fee structure, the cost of obtaining a Japanese visa has risen substantially across all major visa categories.
The new fees include:

Why Has Japan Increased Visa Fees?
According to the Japanese government, the revised pricing reflects rising administrative costs, inflation and changes in exchange rates since visa fees were last reviewed. Officials have also stated that the increase brings Japan’s visa charges more closely into line with those of other major destinations.
Despite the sharp rise, the government does not expect the new fees to significantly affect inbound tourism, particularly as visitors from many countries and regions continue to enjoy visa-free entry.
Who Will Be Affected?
The fee increase only applies to travellers who are required to obtain a visa before entering Japan.
Visitors from countries covered by Japan’s visa exemption programme will not be affected by the change and can continue to enter under the existing visa-free arrangements, provided they meet the relevant entry requirements.
Plan Ahead Before Travelling
For travellers who require a Japanese visa, the higher application costs should now be included when planning travel budgets. As processing requirements remain unchanged, applicants are encouraged to submit their visa applications well in advance of departure to allow sufficient time for processing.
With demand for travel to Japan remaining strong, early planning can help ensure a smooth application process while avoiding last-minute delays.
