Day 1

HANOI AIRPORT PICK-UP – THONG NGUYEN

In the early morning, depart from Hanoi to the northern province of Ha Giang. Stop at Thai Nguyen to visit the Ethnology Museum, a very informative introduction about 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam. You will get an overview of the area and the hill tribes.

Lunch at a local restaurant.

Arrive at Thong Nguyen in the afternoon. Check-in at your hotel.

Day 2

THONG NGUYEN – TREKKING

Breakfast at the hotel.

Easy trekking (about 12 km, 5 hours) to the local minority villages, seeing rice terraces, tea plantations, stilt houses of the Red Dzao, Hmong, Tay, etc.

Picnic lunch.

Return to the hotel where you will have your dinner.

Day 3

THONG NGUYEN – HA GIANG

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart for Ha Giang, capital of the province and starting point for the circle to the remote north. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit Tha and Ha Thanh villages, inhabited by the Tay ethnic minority.

Dinner in the village.

Day 4

HA GIANG - DONG VAN

Breakfast at a local restaurant.

Today you will explore Dong Van, recently recognized as a karst plateau geopark. Go from surprise to surprise along the winding road that will take your breath away. Starting from Ha Giang and heading to Quan Ba, stop at “the heaven gate” to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view from its lookout point over the valley. Continue to Yen Minh and Sung La, then walk to H’Mong and Lolo villages, meet the locals and visit a typical house with thick walls made of soil, only existing in this area.

Lunch en-route.

Before arriving in Dong Van, get down to Saphin and let curiosity guide you through the H’Mong King Palace. It stands out of the rest of the houses in the area due to its size and style, inspired by the Chinese with some French touches. It was built as a palace and fortress to protect from enemy attacks.

Arrive in Dong Van in the afternoon.

Day 5

DONG VAN - MEO VAC – BA BE NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast at a local restaurant.

Dong Van is a modest mountainous town with a nice market open mostly on Sundays with lots of minority ethnic people coming from the surrounding areas. Dong Van is the gate where the 22 km of spectacular road to Meo Vac begins. While driving on this fascinating serpentine road, stop at Ma Pi Leng Pass to admire the natural wonder where the Nho Que River snakes through the karst mountain ranges. Continue to Tinh Tuc and get down to Ba Be national park. Arrive at Ba Be late in the afternoon.

Lunch will be provided en-route.

Day 6

BA BE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, take a boat trip across Ba Be lake passing the legendary Widow’s island, Fairy Pond, walk to Dau Dang cascade then cruise upstream on the Nang river to Puong cave (Bat cave).

Lunch en-route.

In the afternoon, walk or bike to the nearby villages, explore the way of living of local people and catch some glimpses of the splendid mountainous countryside around.

Day 7

BA BE - HANOI AIRPORT DROP-OFF

After breakfast, say farewell to the local family.

Drive through tree-shadowed roads of the national park and make your way to Hanoi.
