Day 1

Bangkok – Home Phutoey

This historical exploration tour takes us to Kanchanaburi province to absorb this region’s wartime history. We take in the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, an interactive museum dedicated to the history of the ‘death railway’ which ran 415 km from Ban Pong in Thailand to Thanbuyuzayat in Burma. This was built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers forced by the Japanese Army to undertake this mammoth task in hostile conditions. This museum offers an educational and moving experience. We also visit the Allied War Cemetery, the resting-place for over 6,000 Allied prisoners, as well as the world-famous Bridge over the River Kwai. A long–tail boat will convey us to the resort for check-in and lunch. This tour of historical and cultural attractions in Kanchanaburi province takes in Jack Chalker’s Gallery and the Sir Weary Dunlop Peace Park. These two memorials tell the story of Allied prisoners of war who were forced to build the Thailand to Burma ‘death railway’ in extremely harsh conditions. The gallery has paintings completed by Jack Chalker, a former British prisoner of war in Kanchanaburi, who used his artistry to portray stories of heroism and bonds forged in hard times between soldiers of different nationalities. The Weary Dunlop Peace Park celebrates the friendship between an Australian soldier and a Thai man native to Kanchanaburi and it reflects the peaceful times that we now enjoy. Dinner and overnight at Home Phutoey River Kwai Resort.

Day 3

Home Phutoey – Bangkok

We visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial and Museum which is dedicated to Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers who were forced to build the Thailand to Burma ‘death railway’ in extremely harsh conditions during World War Two. After viewing the exhibits in this excellent museum and its many audio-visual displays, we walk along the original railway cutting known as Hellfire Pass which was one of the most difficult sections of rock to cut through, but it is now a haven of peace and serenity. Check-out and after lunch at local restaurant, we take a ride on the ‘death railway,’ passing over original wooden viaducts constructed by Allied prisoners during World War Two. We then head back to Bangkok and transfer to our respective hotels.
