Day 1

Chiang Mai – Pai

Leave Chiang Mai and drive north along route No. 107 to Mae Rim and turn left to Mae Saa Valley. Visit the abundant orchid farms. Drive back to route number 107 and continue northwards to Mae Taeng which offers many activities such as rafting or exploration of the nearby hill tribe village of Lahu Shi Ba Lan. Drive back to Mae Taeng and take route number 1095 in the direction of Pai, passing villages that are home to indigenous Karen, Lahu and Lisu tribes. A side trip to Pong Deud Hot Springs is recommended. Overnight at Baan Krating.

Day 2

Pai – Mae Hong Son

Drive westwards along winding route number 1095, which has breathtaking views of Soppong, a small but relatively prosperous market village. It is recommended to take a side trip on route number 1226 to visit the hill tribe village of Mae La Na with its graceful Lanna-style temple in the valley. Drive back to route number 1095 and visit the Lisu hill tribe village of Ban Luk Khao Lam. Continue to the Fish Cave in the middle of a teak forest with a pool which contains numerous strangely coloured carp. Then proceed to Mae Hong Son. Overnight at The Imperial Mae Hong Son Resort.

Day 3

Mae Hong Son

The day is at leisure with the option to take a boat trip on the Pai River to explore the Padaung village of Ban Nam Pieng Din. This is home to the ‘long-neck’ Padaung tribe who wear colourful costumes and numerous brass rings around their necks. In the afternoon drive uphill to visit Wat Phra Dhat Doi Kong Moo which offers a sublime view over Mae Hong Son. Overnight at The Imperial Mae Hong Son Resort.

Day 4

Mae Hong Son – Mae Chaem

Drive south along route number 108 to Khun Yuam. Take an early morning bath at Pha Bong Hot Springs and feeling more refreshed, drive on to Khun Yuam and visit Wat Muai To, the site of a huge and beautiful northern-style pagoda. Continue on route number 1263 eastwards and drive uphill to Nam Tok Mae Surin National Park and the wild sunflower field of Doi Mae U-Kho. Drive back to route number 1263 and continue eastwards and pass the Hmong villages of Ban Pang Oung and Ban Pang Kia. Overnight at Huan Ram Jam Muang.

Day 5

Mae Chaem – Chiang Mai

A visit to a weaving village will give a good insight into the traditional handicraft skills of the northern region. Drive east in Mae Chaem and take route number 1192 uphill to Doi Inthanon. Take care on the narrow and steep road as it climbs to a checkpoint. Turn left (north) onto route number 1009 which leads to the Royal Pagodas on the summit of Doi Inthanon. Drive back the same route and descend eastwards at the checkpoint passing three major waterfalls in the direction of Chom Thong. It is worth visiting Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong and continue on route number 108, via Hang Dong, to Chiang Mai. Visit the handicraft workshops at Ban Tawai and get an insider’s view of Chiang Mai craftspeople at work. Arrive at Chiang Mai and deliver your car to the car hire centre before 5pm.
