Day 2

LUANG PRABANG – TAKBAT - PAK OU

A 5.30am rise is rewarded with the unique opportunity to watch monks on their daily alms giving ceremony. This sees them collect food donations from locals in exchange for a blessing. We then visit the lively local market before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

At 9am we are picked from our hotel by tuk tuk and transferred to the pier where we embark on a traditional boat. We will delve into Luang Prabang’s rich culture and heritage with a cruise to the sacred caves of Pak Ou, a shrine to the river spirit and Lord Buddha, which sits among the limestone cliffs where the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers converge. On the way, stops are made to a village where traditional weaving and rice wine distillation are part of the daily activities of the community there. Lunch is served at local restaurant near the caves.

After our cave exploration, we jump back on the boat and stop on the way at Ban Xang Khong, the handmade paper village. Back in the city we explore the vibrant side of the royal town that takes in the Royal Palace Museum’s treasured relics and the stunning Wat Xieng Thong. Afterwards we transfer back to our hotel via tuk tuk to end the day.

Dinner is at leisure on your own account.

Day 3

OCK POP TOK - LAO BUFFALO FARM - KUANG SI WATERFALL

We have the morning at our own leisure with the option to partake in a hands-on workshop at Ock Pop Tok. The Living Craft Center is a non-profit organisation seeking to preserve traditional weaving techniques, which are an important source of income for many Lao families, but are slowly fading out due to modern-day technology.

Enjoy a local lunch served at Ock Pop Tok’s Silk Road Café with their ‘East Meets West’ cuisine and amazing views over the Mekong. Afterwards we set off a scenic 45-minute drive to the spectacular and take a short jungle jaunt to view a sanctuary that protects endangered bears. You can then take a relaxing dip in Kuang Si Waterfalls’ refreshing rock pools before returning to Luang Prabang later in the afternoon.

Option 1: Natural Dye (Duration: 3 hours) Gather plants and bark from the garden and crush roots, seeds, and leaves whilst following traditional dye recipes. Leave with your own naturally-dyed set of napkins, t-shirt, or scarf. Great for solo travellers, families with kids, and groups of friends.

Option 2: Private Workshops (Perfect for Team-Building) A 2.5-hour hands-on workshop and learning experience. This is a great introduction to the world of Lao textiles where visitors get to try a bit of everything and dye their own scarf to take home.

VANG VIENG – NAM SONG CRUISE AND KAYAKING

This morning, we cruise on a traditional long-tail boat on the Nam Song River. This small river flows through Vang Vieng and it provides a perfect vantage point to soak up the area’s stunning landscape.

Vang Vieng is famed for its sublime scenery of towering limestone karst mountains and it attracts those keen to embrace a slow pace of life. A stop is made at Tham Chang Cave, a natural structure carved in the limestone that is this destination’s most important cave. During the 19th century, villagers used it as a shelter from Chinese invaders. The pathways and stairways inside the cave link a sequence of chambers with amazing rock formations. Lunch is at Vang Vieng Eco Lodge from where we take off our kayak ride back to the city.

Day 6

VANG VIENG - VIENTIANE

We enjoy a morning at leisure and continue our trip in laidback Laos to the most relaxing capital city of southeast Asia. We board the early-afternoon train for a one-hour journey to Vientiane with our picnic lunch box.

On arrival, we head to the surprising Buddha Park. On the outskirts of Vientiane on the Mekong River is a vast manicured garden lined with trees that is home to over 200 concrete sculptures of Buddha, Hindu Gods, demons, and mythological creatures of different sizes. The park's most striking sculpture is a huge pumpkin with three levels representing earth, heaven, and hell which can be explored via a staircase and at the top offering spectacular views of the park. Despite its interesting sculptures, Buddha Park is not a temple although locals regularly frequent the park to worship its religious monuments like its large reclining Buddha.

If time allows, our next stop is at COPE Laos, an organisation helping those with physical disabilities through a nationwide rehabilitation programme in close partnership with the Lao Ministry of Health. Thanks to its supporters, thousands of people with mobility-related disabilities, including unexploded ordnance (UXO) survivors, have received prosthetic and orthotic services free of charge allowing them to regain mobility and dignity. Its visitor centre covers the history of UXO in Laos, the way it affects life in the country and how the work of COPE and other organisations are improving the quality of life for people in Laos.
